KAMPALA, Dec. 3 — Magala Umar, a political activist and former registrar in Kawempe, was released on bail today after spending 18 months in detention without trial. Arrested from City Hall (KCCA) one and a half years ago, Magala faced allegations of terrorism that his supporters describe as fabricated.

Following his arrest, Magala was interrogated by operatives at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI). Authorities accused him of having ties to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a claim that reportedly lacked substantiation. Subsequently, plain-clothed operatives conducted a search of his home, allegedly planting soda bottles with nails in his children’s room, which they claimed were components of petrol bombs.

Magala and several other individuals were charged with terrorism, though some co-accused who cooperated with authorities were removed from the case. The prolonged detention without trial has drawn criticism from human rights groups and activists, who cite this as part of a broader pattern of politically motivated arrests.

Today’s release was met with relief by Magala’s supporters and legal team. “We are deeply grateful to our legal team and comrades who tirelessly seek justice for political prisoners,” a statement from his supporters read. Magala’s release comes as others, including Muyodi Hamidu, remain in detention at Luzira Upper Prison on similar charges.

The case continues to highlight concerns over the treatment of political detainees and the use of prolonged pre-trial detention in Uganda.
