KAMPALA, Uganda, Nov. 21— Hajara Nakitto, the mother of Amos Ssegawa, a 15-year-old student killed during the November 2020 protests, continues her fight for justice amid prolonged delays in receiving court-awarded compensation. Last year, the High Court granted Nakitto UGX 50 million in damages for the extrajudicial killing of her son, a sum she initially criticized as inadequate but chose not to appeal to expedite payment. However, she has yet to receive the funds.

Nakitto has visited numerous government offices seeking resolution but has been repeatedly told to wait. Officials have cited a backlog of cases, with some victims reportedly waiting up to two decades for compensation. Despite her persistence, the bureaucratic impasse continues.

Yesterday, Nakitto visited the National Unity Platform (NUP) offices to express gratitude for the party’s financial and moral support throughout her ordeal. She also urged the party to amplify her demand for justice and accountability.

“This delay adds insult to injury,” Nakitto said. “Amos’ life mattered, and justice must be served without further obstruction.”

Nakitto’s case underscores the challenges many families face in seeking restitution for human rights violations in Uganda.
