In a heartfelt ceremony, the British High Commission in Uganda paid tribute to Ugandan soldiers who served and sacrificed their lives during World War I. The commemoration event, held at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Jinja, honored the bravery and dedication of the Ugandan soldiers who fought alongside British forces over a century ago.

Representatives from the British High Commission, alongside Ugandan government officials, diplomats, and families of the fallen, gathered to remember and recognize the contributions of these soldiers. The ceremony included a wreath-laying, prayers, and moments of silence, symbolizing the enduring respect and gratitude for the sacrifices made during the global conflict.

“These brave men contributed immensely to the fight for freedom and peace, and their legacy continues to be remembered with the deepest respect,” stated the British High Commissioner to Uganda. “This commemoration is a reminder of our shared history and a testament to the courage shown by Ugandan soldiers who answered the call to serve far from home.”

Over 2,000 Ugandan soldiers served in World War I, facing harsh conditions and enduring numerous challenges in East Africa and beyond. Many lost their lives, and others returned deeply impacted by their experiences. The contributions of these soldiers have often gone unrecognized, but events such as this one highlight their vital role in history.

As part of ongoing efforts to preserve this legacy, the British High Commission and Ugandan government are also working together on initiatives to maintain historical sites and educate future generations on the contributions of African soldiers during both World Wars.

This solemn occasion underscored the importance of remembrance and mutual respect, reinforcing the strong ties between Uganda and the United Kingdom. The legacy of the fallen Ugandan soldiers continues to live on, remembered by both nations as symbols of courage, unity, and shared sacrifice.
