Kampala, August 20, 2024 — Recent attempts to mislead the public and discredit the vital work of human rights defenders in Uganda have surfaced, specifically targeting the team at Agora Center for Research Ltd. A document circulating online, allegedly authored by Isaac Ssemakadde of the Legal Brains Trust, seeks to cast a shadow over the significant contributions made by Agora and its leaders, including Agather Atuhaire, Godwin Toko, and Jimmy Spire Ssentongo.

CMP Publications would like to caution the public against this document, which appears to be a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the positive impact Agora has made in promoting democratic engagement and supporting initiatives such as March2Parliament. This campaign is widely recognized for its role in advocating for the rights and freedoms of Ugandans, especially in the face of the oppressive tactics employed by the current regime.

The content of the document is not only misleading but harmful, as it attempts to undermine the credibility of a team that has been at the forefront of advancing social justice and transparency in Uganda. It is essential to recognize these efforts and remain vigilant against the diversionary tactics often used by the regime of President Museveni to weaken the momentum of movements pushing for democratic change.

Agora’s work, particularly under the USAID-CIPESA project (Your Rights Activity, YRA), has been crucial in fostering accountability and protecting the rights of Ugandans. The organization has consistently adhered to principles of transparency and democratic engagement, contrary to the accusations of defensiveness and harassment mentioned in the document.

CMP Publications urges the public to support Agora and similar organizations in their ongoing efforts to hold the government accountable and promote human rights. It is critical to stay informed and recognize attempts to distort the truth as part of a broader strategy to stifle dissent and maintain the status quo.

In these challenging times, we must remain united in our pursuit of justice and resist efforts to sow discord among those fighting for a better Uganda.
