Geneva – The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed regret over the United States’ recent announcement of its intent to withdraw from the global health body.

The WHO emphasized its vital role in safeguarding the health and security of people worldwide, including Americans. The organization addresses the root causes of diseases, strengthens health systems, and responds to health emergencies, even in areas where others cannot reach. The WHO has been instrumental in detecting and managing disease outbreaks and has been crucial in supporting global health initiatives.

As a founding member of WHO in 1948, the United States has played an essential role in shaping and guiding the organization’s work for more than seven decades. Together with 193 other member states, the U.S. has been part of critical health milestones, including the eradication of smallpox and the near-elimination of polio. American institutions have not only contributed to but also benefited from WHO membership, which has positively impacted global health and security.

In recent years, WHO has implemented its largest set of reforms in history, aiming to improve accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact. These reforms, supported by the United States and other member states, are ongoing and continue to enhance WHO’s ability to respond to health challenges globally.

The WHO expressed hope that the United States would reconsider its decision and is eager to engage in constructive dialogue to preserve the partnership between the U.S. and the organization, ultimately benefiting the health and well-being of millions worldwide
