Kampala, Uganda – The Resurgence Network for Human Rights has released a strong statement condemning the detention and sentencing of Kiiza Eron, a prominent human rights lawyer and legal representative of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye. Kiiza was sentenced to nine months in prison by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) General Court Martial on charges of contempt of court.
In its statement, the Resurgence Network described the detention as an egregious abuse of judicial authority and a glaring violation of constitutional principles. The organization expressed grave concern over the growing pattern of judicial overreach and the targeting of individuals advocating for justice and democracy in Uganda.
The Network emphasized that Kiiza Eron was sentenced without being given the opportunity to defend himself, with the charges neither clearly articulated nor substantiated. This breach of due process undermines the basic tenets of justice and the rule of law.
Misuse of the General Court Martial’s Mandate:
The Resurgence Network criticized the ongoing practice of the General Court Martial presiding over cases involving civilians, contrary to constitutional provisions. “This is not only a violation of Uganda’s legal framework but also an affront to the rights of all citizens,” the statement read.
The harsh and arbitrary sentencing of Kiiza Eron reflects an alarming trend of using military tribunals to suppress dissent and intimidate those defending opposition figures, according to the organization.
Attack on Democracy:
The Resurgence Network warned that such actions erode public confidence in the judiciary, weaken democratic institutions, and constitute a direct assault on human rights.
The Resurgence Network has urged the government and international community to act swiftly to address this miscarriage of justice. Their demands include:
The immediate and unconditional release of Kiiza Eron.
A review of the General Court Martial’s jurisdiction to limit its mandate to strictly military cases.
Legal and political accountability for those responsible for the misuse of judicial authority.
Solidarity with Human Rights Defenders
“The targeting of Kiiza Eron is a warning to all who dare to stand for justice in Uganda,” the Network’s statement declared. “We stand in solidarity with all human rights defenders and will not remain silent in the face of such gross injustices.”
The Resurgence Network is calling on civil society organizations, international bodies, and human rights defenders to join them in amplifying this issue. They aim to mobilize collective action to challenge the misuse of judicial power and protect those fighting for democracy and human rights in Uganda.
