In a shocking development, Justice Lydia Mugambe, a prominent Ugandan judge, has been arrested by UK police on allegations of forced labor and modern-day slavery. Mugambe, who served as a High Court judge in Uganda from 2013 to 2020, faces serious charges related to her time in the UK, where she is currently pursuing further studies.

According to authorities, the charges against Mugambe include conspiring to breach UK immigration laws, facilitating the travel of a Ugandan national to the UK with the intention of exploitation, and forcing the individual to work under coercive conditions. The alleged victim was reportedly transported to the UK to work as a domestic servant but was instead subjected to forced labor against their will.

The case has drawn significant attention in both the UK and Uganda, given Mugambe’s distinguished judicial career, particularly in human rights rulings. A trial is scheduled to begin in February 2025 at Oxford Crown Court, where Mugambe will face the allegations.

Thames Valley Police, who are leading the investigation, have charged Mugambe under the UK’s modern slavery laws, and the Crown Prosecution Service authorized the charges earlier this year
