Montreal, September 2024
The streets of Montreal echoed with cries of “Museveni Must Go” today as Ugandans staged a protest against President Museveni’s rule, spurred by the recent shooting of opposition leader Bobi Wine. The protest, led by National Unity Platform (NUP) activists, was part of a broader nationwide demonstration taking place across Canadian cities.
Protesters gathered in downtown Montreal, holding banners denouncing the authoritarian tactics of Museveni’s regime and demanding that Canada and the international community intervene to stop the violence in Uganda. “We are here because we are outraged by what is happening back home. Bobi Wine was almost killed, and we fear that Uganda is on the verge of total destruction if Museveni is allowed to continue unchecked,” said one of the protest leaders.
The march proceeded peacefully through the streets of Montreal, culminating in a rally where participants called on Canadian leaders to impose sanctions on Uganda and support efforts to restore democracy. CMP Publications and Afro Live FM Canada provided live updates, reporting on the strong turnout and the palpable anger among protesters.
