Khartoum, August 19, 2024 — Sudan’s already dire humanitarian crisis has taken a tragic turn as a cholera outbreak has claimed the lives of over 300 people. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that more than 25 million Sudanese are currently experiencing acute hunger, with famine conditions officially declared in North Darfur. This outbreak, alongside ongoing conflict and displacement, has exacerbated the suffering of millions.

The cholera epidemic, spread through contaminated food and water, is particularly deadly in regions where healthcare infrastructure has collapsed. In Sudan, the ongoing civil war has devastated medical facilities and created conditions where clean water and sanitation are scarce, making it nearly impossible to control the spread of the disease.

The humanitarian situation in Sudan is one of the most severe in the world today. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), over half of the country’s population is struggling to meet basic food needs. In the hardest-hit areas, such as North Darfur, people have resorted to eating leaves and grass to survive, with 755,000 individuals experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

In an effort to address the growing crisis, the Sudanese government is engaged in talks with U.S. and Egyptian officials. These discussions, centered on the implementation of the Jeddah Agreement, are intended to establish humanitarian protections and ensure that aid reaches those most in need. However, progress has been slow, and the situation on the ground continues to deteriorate.

The cholera outbreak, combined with the effects of the civil war and the resulting displacement of over 10 million people, highlights the urgent need for international intervention. Humanitarian organizations are calling for increased support and immediate action to prevent further loss of life.

As the situation unfolds, CMP Publications will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
