Ugandan Court Remands Three TikTokers Over Alleged Insults Toward President Museveni, Family, and Artists

Entebbe, Uganda – CMP News Desk

In a controversial move highlighting Uganda’s stance on digital content and public criticism, the Entebbe Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded three TikTok influencers on charges of hate speech and distributing malicious content targeting key figures in the nation. David Ssengozi, known on TikTok as “Lucky Choice,” and Isaiah Ssekagiri, posting under “cetewayosense29,” were both sent to Kigo Prison with their next hearing scheduled for November 13, 2024.

Prosecutors allege that Ssengozi used his TikTok platform between September and October 2024 to post videos that were “demeaning” and “malicious” toward President Yoweri Museveni, First Lady Janet Museveni, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and prominent local artists including Full Figure, Gravity Omutujju, and Alien Skin. Similarly, Ssekagiri is accused of creating and posting content ridiculing President Museveni over a period stretching from January to October 2024.

The charges against the two influencers are brought under Uganda’s Computer Misuse Act, which criminalizes online hate speech and malicious publication. The government has used this law in recent years to regulate digital content and curb what it sees as online abuse, though critics argue it poses a risk to free speech in the country. Human rights advocates and legal experts warn that cases like this could stifle political discourse, as they contend the law’s broad definitions allow authorities to interpret criticism as criminal behavior.

CMP Publications will monitor the progression of this case as it raises questions about balancing freedom of speech and accountability in the digital age. The next court hearing on November 13 could set new legal precedents for how Uganda handles online content critical of public figures and institutions.
