Olivia Lutaaya challenges security search claims in high-profile treason case

KAMPALA, Uganda, Nov. 26—Olivia Lutaaya, one of 19 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) political party, denied claims that security officers searched her home for weapons or explosives before her arrest. The detainees, arrested on allegations of treachery and unlawful possession of explosives, have faced military court charges since 2020.

The NUP, a prominent opposition group in Uganda, has criticized the government’s handling of these cases, asserting that the charges are politically motivated. The military court sentenced the group despite ongoing controversies surrounding the evidence presented. Further developments are anticipated as human rights organizations monitor the case.
