National Unity Platform honors victims of 2020 protests, demands justice

KAMPALA, Uganda, Nov. 18 — The National Unity Platform (NUP) held prayers at its headquarters today to commemorate the deaths of over 150 citizens who were shot by security forces during protests on Nov. 18-19, 2020. The victims, including schoolchildren, were killed in demonstrations following the arrest of NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, in Luuka District.

For four years, families of the victims have sought justice without success. In December 2020, a legal team led by lawyer Nicholas Opiyo was abducted and later prosecuted for investigating the killings. President Yoweri Museveni had pledged compensation for the victims’ families, but these promises remain unfulfilled. Attempts to seek accountability have been met with punitive actions, including legal crackdowns on advocacy efforts.
