Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Impeached in Historic Vote

Reported by CMP News

NAIROBI, October 8, 2024 – In a historic and politically charged move, Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was impeached by the National Assembly following overwhelming support from Members of Parliament. A total of 281 MPs voted in favor of the motion, spearheaded by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, citing multiple charges, including corruption, ethnic incitement, and abuse of office. Only 44 legislators opposed the impeachment, while one abstained.

The impeachment motion was prompted by allegations that Gachagua amassed wealth through questionable means, coerced the sale of family properties, and failed in his duties as Deputy President by engaging in divisive politics. The charges have stirred political tensions across the country, with the Deputy President calling the motion a political witch hunt designed to force him out of office prematurely.

During his defense before the National Assembly, Gachagua played video clips in an attempt to shift blame onto President William Ruto and other government officials, accusing them of similar conduct. However, the National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula, reprimanded Gachagua for his remarks, calling them “abhorrent” and not befitting the conduct expected from someone holding his office(

Gachagua’s next battle now shifts to the Senate, where the impeachment motion will be reviewed. The Senate is expected to form a special committee to investigate the charges in detail. If two-thirds of the Senate votes to uphold the impeachment, Gachagua will be officially removed from office. Until then, he remains in his role as Deputy President.

This impeachment marks a major turning point in Kenya’s political landscape and raises questions about the future of Gachagua’s political career and his alliance with President Ruto, who has distanced himself from the controversy. CMP News will continue to follow this developing story.
