Ugandans March in Solidarity, Demand Justice After Bobi Wine Shooting

Niagara Falls, September 2024
Niagara Falls witnessed an unprecedented protest today as Ugandans living in Canada joined the nationwide “Museveni Must Go” movement, ignited by the assassination attempt on opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine. The protest, led by National Unity Platform (NUP) figurehead Samuel Lujjya, began in downtown Niagara Falls, drawing significant attention from locals, tourists, and global observers alike.

Carrying banners with slogans such as “Save Uganda” and “Museveni Out Now,” the demonstrators made their way through the streets of the city, demanding urgent intervention from Canada and the international community in Uganda’s leadership crisis. The protesters gathered at the iconic Niagara Falls, where they paused for a solemn moment of silence, symbolizing the precarious state of Uganda’s democracy under Museveni’s regime.

“How can we stand by while our country is torn apart by a dictatorship? Bobi Wine was nearly killed simply for standing up for what is right. We are here today to demand justice and to call on the world to help us save Uganda,” said Samuel Lujjya during an impassioned speech to the crowd.

Afro Live FM Canada broadcasted the event live, capturing the intensity and urgency in the voices of the participants, who called for the international community to take immediate action before Uganda descends into further chaos. The protest in Niagara Falls mirrored similar demonstrations happening across Canadian cities, with Ugandans in the diaspora refusing to remain silent in the face of escalating violence and oppression back home.
