Opposition Leader Davis Lewis Rubongoya Speaks Out

Davis Lewis Rubongoya, the Secretary-General of the opposition party, provided an update on the recent spate of arrests targeting party members. In a statement issued today, he expressed gratitude to comrades, leaders, and legal representatives who tirelessly worked to secure the release of those unlawfully detained.

Rubongoya reported that in Kasangati, four party members, apprehended on Monday under suspicion of wearing attire resembling security forces, were released on police bond. Similarly, in Bundibugyo, Western Prince, Clophas Kabukarange, and their driver were discharged without charge this evening.

However, the situation in Mbale presented a different scenario. Comrade Lwaka Ismail, discovered engaging in voter registration activities, was charged with “sabotaging government programs” but subsequently released on police bond.

Rubongoya lamented the incarceration of some comrades. Battle Kay has been remanded to Bugungu Prison in Buikwe until May 29th, while Latif Madoi remains detained at Nagalama Police, pending a court appearance tomorrow. Additionally, Matovu Vincent and Katuluntu Godfrey faced charges related to wearing uniforms designated solely for the armed forces and were remanded. Bukenya Joseph appeared before the City Hall Court and was also remanded.

The caretaker of the NUP_Ug office in Kamwokya, Evans Bukenya, has been detained at Jinja Road Police since Monday. Rubongoya reiterated the party’s demand for the immediate release of all detained individuals, labeling them as political prisoners.

The developments underscore the ongoing tensions between opposition figures and the government, with accusations of arbitrary arrests and suppression of dissent prevalent. Rubongoya’s statement serves as a call for justice and the upholding of democratic principles in Uganda.
